PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Communications Manager, the Translator / Editor is responsible for ensuring high quality translation and Korean-language communication products from MSF Korea.  The Translator / Editor will ensure the content is translated and adapted in an accurate and reliable manner while preserving MSF tone of voice and style.   The Translator / Editor will ensure the workflow of content production including translating, editing, curating imagery, and reviewing for various MSF platforms and publications.  The Translator will also provide translation and editorial support as needed to other departments in the MSF Korea office.  
 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. TRANSLATION
    • Ensure the quality of translations and manage the timeline so that translations are completed and deadlines are met;
    • Translate copy and text from source documents of varying subject matter (English-Korean); 
    • Manage translation projects and source external translators when needed.
    • Manage and maintain a pool of translators and interpreters.
    • Manage the MSF glossary and terminology database, and carry out glossary/terminology research using various online tools and indexes.
    • Work in collaboration with other departments to support their translation needs.
    • Support in interpretations of media interviews.(English-Korean)
    • If a professional interpreter or staff (person in charge) is not available, interpret as a backup for MSF Korea events, meetings, talks, and other needs (English to Korean, Korean to English).
  2. EDITING
    • Ensure the editorial workflow on daily basis under the supervision of Communications Manager; 
    • Assist in review of Korean-language copy for publications, web/digital platforms, multimedia, and events or campaign collateral to ensure accuracy and consistency of MSF terminology, style and tone of voice. 
    • Support production of the MSFK news magazines and annual report.
    • Support copy-editing, restructure articles and shorten text as required.
    • Support proof-reading and fact checking copy for factual accuracy; check photo captions and credits as required.


QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. ESSENTIAL SKILLS
    • Genuine commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles 
    • Minimum 3 years of work experience in professional translation and/or editorial production of bilingual content (Korean, English)
    • Bachelor’s degree in translation, communications,  journalism or literature, and/or certification in translation (English-Korean) 
    • Strong Korean writing skills
    • Proficient in content editing; including curating text and images for online and print, editing, proofreading, writing and editing subtitles for video content
    • Strong fact-checking, proofreading, and copy editing skills
    • Accuracy and attention to detail
    • Ability to learn and adopt MSF communications, style and tone of voice quickly
    • Proactive in self-management and ability to work independently or as part of a team
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, creative, and flexible personality
    • Comfortable working within a global organization and with colleagues of different cultures and across different time zones
    • English and Korean language fluency 
  2. DESIREABLE SKILLS
    • Copywriting experience 
    • Interpretation skills
    • Book and other long-form text translations
    • Experience working with a NGO or non-profit organization
    • Knowledge and interest in humanitarian issues and international affairs
